How to get your YouTube videos cited by AI search

Short answer

AI engines cite the video that answers one specific question most clearly. Channel size matters little. Find the questions your buyers ask, check which videos AI cites today, then publish a clearer video with the question’s words in the title, the description and the chapters.

The method

Get cited by AI in four steps

You can do all of this by hand. It takes time, but it works.

  1. 1

List the questions your buyers ask AI

Write down 10 to 20 questions a buyer would type into ChatGPT before choosing a product like yours. Use their words, not yours. Think problems (“how do I…”), comparisons (“X vs Y”) and choices (“best tool for…”).

Ask your sales team for the questions prospects ask on calls. They are the same questions people ask AI.

  2. 2

Check which videos AI cites today

Ask each question on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google. Note every YouTube video in the answers and in the sources. A question where AI already cites a video is a question where AI wants a video.

Ask with web search on. Without it, assistants answer from memory and rarely link anything.

  3. 3

Make the clearest video on the question

Answer the question in the first 30 seconds. Put the question’s words in the title and in the first line of the description. Add chapters named after the sub-questions. Be specific: steps, numbers, real screens.

Look at what the cited videos miss. Old screens, vague steps and missing alternatives are your opening.

  4. 4

    Track the answers and update

AI answers change every week. Ask the same questions again after you publish. If your video isn’t cited after a few weeks, sharpen the title, rewrite the first lines of the description, or add chapters.

With RankTube

RankTube does the four steps for you

Add your website. RankTube writes the questions, asks every engine and tells you which video to make.

Step 1, automated

Your buyers’ questions, asked on every engine

RankTube reads your website and writes the questions your buyers ask. Each one is asked live on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus YouTube search.

Step 2, automated

Every video AI cites or reads

For each question, see the videos each engine cites, the ones it only consulted, and where they rank on Google and YouTube. Your own videos and your competitors’ are flagged.

Step 3, automated

The video to make, with a brief

Subjects are ranked by how likely a new video is to be cited. Each comes with 3 titles, chapters, the points to cover and a description, ready to film.

Example

One question, five engines

What you see when you check a single buyer question.

Buyer question

“What’s the best tool to monitor brand mentions on Reddit?”

  • ChatGPT

Names three tools and cites their pricing pages. No video.

  • Gemini

Recommends a YouTube tutorial from a small channel, published last year.

  • Perplexity

Cites a Reddit thread and the same YouTube tutorial.

  • Claude

    Cites two comparison articles.

  • AI Overviews

AI Overview links to a YouTube video at the chapter that compares tools.

The video to make

YouTube

Reddit monitoring tools compared: which one finds real leads?

Two engines already cite the same small video. A clearer, up-to-date comparison has a real chance to replace it.

Illustrative example. Your analysis uses your own buyer questions and live AI answers.

AI search engines answer the question themselves. They show a short answer and a few sources. The sources decide who gets the click.

YouTube is one of the sources they use most. Google’s AI Overviews cite YouTube more than any other website. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity add videos when a question needs a demo, a tutorial or a comparison.

The cited videos are often small. They win because they answer one question well. That is good news for B2B brands. You don’t need a big channel. You need the right subjects.

How each AI engine picks videos

Each engine searches the web its own way. So each one cites different videos.

EngineHow it finds videosWhat it tends to cite
ChatGPTSearches the web, then picks a few sourcesWhole videos with a clear, matching title
GeminiUses Google SearchVideos that already rank on Google and YouTube
PerplexityRuns several searches and lists all its sourcesVideos and forum threads next to articles
ClaudeSearches the web when the question needs itFewer videos, more articles and docs
Google AI OverviewsUses Google’s own resultsYouTube links, often to a precise moment

The lesson: don’t optimize for one engine. Make the clearest video on the question, and make it easy to match.

What makes a video easy to cite

Use this checklist before you publish.

  • One question per video. “How to set up SSO in Okta” beats “Okta overview”.
  • The question’s words in the title. Engines match titles to questions.
  • The answer in the first lines of the description. That is what engines read first.
  • Chapters named after sub-questions. Google often links to one chapter.
  • Correct captions. Fix product names and technical terms.
  • Real proof. Show the screens, the numbers, the steps.
  • Honest alternatives. Videos that compare options fairly get cited more.

Mistakes that keep videos out of AI answers

  • Clever titles. A title that hides the subject can’t be matched to a question.
  • Long intros. If the answer comes after 2 minutes, engines and viewers move on.
  • Product tours instead of answers. Nobody asks AI for your product tour. They ask how to solve a problem.
  • Publishing once and forgetting. Answers change. Update titles and descriptions when they do.

How to measure your AI visibility

Track three numbers for your buyer questions:

  1. Mentions. In how many AI answers does your brand appear?
  2. Video citations. How many answers cite a YouTube video, and whose?
  3. Your videos cited. How many of those cited videos are yours?

You can check these by hand with our free checkers, like the ChatGPT video checker. Or let RankTube ask every question on every engine and show the numbers in one dashboard.

FAQ

Questions about AI search and YouTube

Does ChatGPT watch YouTube videos?

Not like a person. When it searches the web, ChatGPT reads what it can about a video: the title, the description, and sometimes the transcript. That’s why the words in your title and description matter so much.

Can a small channel get cited by AI?

Yes. AI engines pick the video that answers the question best, not the one with the most subscribers. Many cited videos have only a few thousand views.

Do captions and transcripts help?

They help engines understand what the video says. Check that YouTube’s automatic captions are correct, especially for product names and technical terms.

Do YouTube Shorts get cited?

Rarely for B2B questions. Engines cite videos that explain something in depth: tutorials, comparisons and walkthroughs. Shorts work better for reach than for citations.

How long does it take to get cited?

It varies. Google can pick up a video in days. Assistants that search the web can cite it as soon as it ranks for the question. Check your questions again a few weeks after you publish.

What is GEO?

GEO means generative engine optimization: making your content easy for AI engines to find, understand and cite. YouTube is one of the strongest GEO channels, because AI engines cite it so often.
